The Earned Income Tax Credit – worth up to $5,866 in 2011 – provides an important source of income for more than $26 million Americans. In 2009, Mississippi led the nation with an average credit of $2,586 per filer. But about 20% of eligible persons do not file, which means that Mississippians are leaving $250 million on the table every year. Similar problems exist for other programs, including food stamps, Hope and Lifetime Learner credits, and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.
